In the colonial historiography (for example, de Bouveignes), the former African kingdom is often presented as the success story of early colonisation. What is highlighted in these accounts is the conversion of the Kongo royal family to Catholicism in 1491 and the subsequent renaming of the capital city from Mbanza-Kongo to San Salvador. This encounter, however, had a much more sinister consequence as it provided Portugal with the basis on which the slave trade from Africa to Brazil would gradually develop, contribute to Portuguese prosperity and, conversely, deprive the Kongo of a vital workforce, whilst exacerbating the oligarchic nature of the dynasty.
