The performance increases as the impact occurs further from the border. The DoP for penetration at 10mni from the border was 40nun. This was almost three-times the DoP w-lien the penetration was far from the border. For example. there was 151nm DoP when the distance was 45nim from the closest border. Beyond a critical distance (between 30 and 35mm) the DoP reaches a consistent value (allowing for experimental scatter). At this location, the material‘s intrinsic ballistic performance was measured due to the absence of border effects.

Both t>pe of indentations exhibited transgranular fracture pattern. But the crack path under static indentation also showed an intermittent zig-zag pattern within the grains which was not observed under dynamic indentation. The observed crack pattern under static loading has been correlated to the formation of cleavage steps on fracture surface. 4. A 2-D finite element framework has been developed to model the transgranular cracking observed under static indentations. 42 Advances in Ceramic Armor Ill Static and Dynamic Indentation Response of Fine Grained Boron Carbide 5.
