Philosophy is the transliteration of the singular injunctions delivered by its trans-material conditions, and the recomposition of these effects in a system under the heading of "Truth". 14 Since philosophy - philosophy worthy of the name - must be conditioned by all four conditions, we can recompose the history of philosophy as the history of the diverse knottings of these conditions. To give two telegraphic examples: Plato uses mathematics as the primary pedagogical device to rupture with the arts, which are banished from the ideal republic in the name of political justice, and which at once presumes and enables the proper love of the idea; in Aristotle, the paradigm of thought is not mathematical (at which Aristotle was reputedly 32 THE CONDITIONS hopeless), but biological; the arts become mimetic and cathartic modes with no stake themselves in truth; politics becomes the study of various organizations in the service of the good life; and love founds the relation to virtuous activity.
Althusser's students - Jacques Ranciere, Etienne Balibar, Pierre Macherey, Badiou, Francois Regnault and others - were not happy about the status of philosophy with regard to this distinction. Althusser argues that the field of theoretical practice is divided by a contradiction between science and ideology, defined in the following manner: Science is the productive practice of knowledges, whose means of production are concepts; whilst ideology is a system of representations, whose function is pratico-social, and which auto-designates itself in a set of notions.
7 Yet he is also clearly the originator, in thought, of the necessity for an exoteric mathematical orientation: "Let no one enter here who is not a geometer" read the sign over the Academy's doorway. Oddly enough, this evinces a strange continuity with Lacan. For if mathematics is the science of the real, what happens if one takes this claim seriously, that is, literally} Lacan does not say "logic is the science of the real", despite his own profound Hegelian affiliations. As Badiou proposes in Being and Event, why not hold that mathematics inscribes being itself?
